TOYOTA RESEARCH INSTITUTE | ENVIRONMENTAL SIGNAGE AND GRAPHIC DESIGN
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS
Studio HHH created a cohesive signage and graphics package for the Toyota Research Institute in Cambridge, MA, which included all wayfinding, stand-off logos, playful vinyl graphics, as well as room and workspace identification signs.
The process began with developing a unique room identification system which used double panes of glass to create an illusion of a floating box. This design is a visual reference to the scanning system employed by the lidar scanning mechanism which makes autonomous vehicles possible.
The aesthetic developed for the room identification signs then informed the style and execution strategy for the rest of the interior signage, including the stand-off logo sign at the main entrance and the playful wayfinding elements throughout.
The contemporary aesthetic of the newly renovated interior was an ideal palette of mixed materiality to showcase the simple and elegant signage system, which complements the historic brick building in innovative Kendall Square.
