When the Toyota Research Institute asked for a creative and compelling digital installation that incorporated their brand identity, our studio created a permanent projection artwork that is micro mapped onto a white tessellated wall finish. An elegant hybrid of digital content and physical form, the installation is located directly behind the reception desk and is the point of first impression for the company.
The initial concepts for the animated patterns were derived loosely from TRI developed technologies, such as autonomous vehicles emitting light to scan their surroundings and the process by which to identify other objects in motion. The projection content ebbs and flows with textures that pattern the walls and eventually resolve into the logo, serving as a replacement for permanent signage.
To test our installation prototype, our team set up a full-scale mockup of the entire installation within our studio, upside down, with the projector rested on the floor instead of on the ceiling to mimic the positioning of the projector within the TRI offices. The entire mockup included the tessellated wall pattern and the wood panel that was used in the final installation in order to map the projector precisely to specific ridges and knots.
