Serpentine – A projection mapped suspended sculpture

Serpentine – A projection mapped suspended sculpture

Serpentine is an original site specific public artwork commissioned by Boston Properties and designed for the Atrium at 100 Federal in Downtown Boston. The sculpture consists of eight individual hanging elements brought to life with projection-mapped animated art. The movement and color crossing all surfaces folds the individual elements together into a singular whole, creating a serpentine like form arcing through the large glass hall.

This installation is designed to be viewed from three specific vantage points, with the experience of the sculpture changing dramatically depending on the location it is viewed from. The speed of the content mirrors the speed at which one approaches the sculpture from three particular viewing angles. For those walking in from South Station at the start of their workday, the sculpture will appear to be a singular orb with inwardly swirling content. For those with longer dwell-time at the cafe seating perhaps during their lunch break, the experience is of a slow moving hue shift that wraps the full length of the serpentine form. For those driving past, or leaving for the day, the sculpture will take the shape of a meteor, with cascading content moving in the direction of the flow of traffic.

From each vantage point that visitors experience throughout their work day, the appearance of the installation is dramatically different. The lasting impression of the artwork becomes a collection of these many moments of one’s day.
